The Gachatha Coffee Factory, established in 1963 by the Gachatha Farmers' Co-operative Society Ltd., is located on the slopes of the Aberdare mountain range in Nyeri County, Kenya. Situated at altitudes between 1,800 and 2,100 meters above sea level, the region boasts deep, fertile, well-drained red volcanic soils ideal for coffee production. The factory, managed by Jane Nyawira, supports its 1,542 members by offering agricultural inputs on credit, cash advances, and pre-financing for school expenses and emergencies. Emphasizing sustainability, the factory treats all water in infiltration pits to prevent contamination of local water sources and actively protects indigenous trees. The processing involves a wet method where ripe cherries are de-pulped, fermented overnight, cleaned, soaked, and then dried on elevated tables, ensuring high-quality washed coffee.
